Trauma isn’t just a memory or flash back of the actual event that happens; it’s a reaction embedded in our body’s memory. When we experience a traumatic event, adrenaline surges through us, imprinting the memory into the amygdala, the emotional core of our brain. This process encodes the intensity and impulse of our emotions. Understanding this is crucial for releasing trauma from our bodies. Here are three tips to help ground you when this happens!
Hello. My name is Courtney Hanson. I am a trauma somatic healing therapist and also the founder of the NSRS method, removing trauma from your body because our body holds a memory. I wanna remind you of something. Trauma comes back as a reaction, not necessarily as a memory.
Now what this means is our amygdala is far more affected than our cognitive brain can even catch up with. So when we have a trauma response and we lash out or we get angry or we numb and the body starts to shake. It’s a reaction. It’s a reaction to something that happened that triggered the brain into thinking that the same event was happening because we can’t separate the 2 because cognitively, rationally, you know what’s happening, but the body doesn’t. So I wanna give you 3 tips that you can do when this happens to bring yourself into a space of being responsive instead of reactive.
I am going to make this actually obtainable instead of giving you something crazy because when you are in it and the walls are craving in, you need something quick that you can do.
- Step 1, you’re gonna shake. You’re gonna shake like crazy. Shake your entire body and move out that energy.
- Next, you’re gonna take off those shoes and you’re just gonna walk wherever you can walk on ground on the earth and balance the frequency within your body and ground into the present moment and what’s happening.
- And 3rd, you’re gonna sit, you’re gonna close your eyes, and you’re gonna repeat a mantra that you make up.
If you’re not familiar with mantras, you can find some here. But essentially, you’re going to say positive things to yourself, like:
“I am amazing and strong.”
“I can overcome anything.”
“Nothing can hold me back. I can do all things I set my mind to.”
“I am beautiful in the skin I’m in.”
These 3 steps is how you deal with trauma. Have you tried this before? Comment below and let me know what you think or how it’s helped you! Want help with your trauma? Learn about how I can help you with Trauma Somatic Therapy here.
