Comedians to Keep An Eye Out For
New comedians seem to be popping up just about every day and everywhere – from movies and television like Saturday Night Live to local comedy clubs and countless specials, particularly on Netflix.
Netflix has established itself as the premier home for stand-up, paying millions to big-name comedians like Eddy Murphy and Ricky Gervais, as Business Insider recently noted, but if you like good comedy, you’ll find plenty of outstanding up-and-coming comedians too, including some you should really keep an eye out for.
Nate Jackson
Nate Jackson grew up near Seattle, Washington, but has been in Los Angeles for nearly 10 years pursuing his comedic career. You won’t just be laughing at the punch lines during one of his stand-up shows, it’s non-stop laughter from beginning to end. He’s written for celebrities like Leslie Jones and Nick Cannon ever since he arrived in the City of Angels. In 2010, Jackson managed to win the Bay Area Black Comedy Competition. He’s shared the stage with famous comedians like Don “DC” Curry, Bill Bellamy and Tony Roberts too.
Jessica Michelle Singleton
The debut comedy album for Jessica Michelle Singleton, Please. Don’t. Leave. Me., reached No. 1 on the iTunes charts and was considered for the Best Comedy Album Grammy. Singleton tours worldwide and has been a top performer at multiple International Comedy Festivals. You can hear her comedy regularly on SiriusXM’s Raw Dog Comedy Channel or listen in on her podcast, Ignorance is #Blessed. A paid regular at the internationally renowned Comedy Store, Singleton has weekly club performances in Los Angeles. If you see her perform, expect an act that’s unique, introspective, and exceptionally witty.
Paul Virzi
Stand-up comic Bill Burr, whom you might know from the hit drama Breaking Bad, chose Paul Virzi as the 2019 breakout comedian. Virzi has toured with Burr in many iconic theaters, like Madison Square Garden and Carnegie Hall, and in November 2018 the pair collaborated on a Comedy Central special. His comedy album was number one on iTunes and hit No. 4 on the Billboard charts. He is touring in Pennsylvania, New York, and Texas through the end of the year.
Clare O’Kane
Clare O’Kane is from San Jose, California and currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. She is often cast in short films and appeared on the network Viceland, known for its hit television shows like Bong Appetit. O’Kane has even been a writer the well-known cartoon SpongeBob Squarepants. Frequently described as “weird and unique,” her wonderful humor and sarcasm can regularly be seen around the New York City area.
Nore Davis
If you don’t already know the name Nore Davis, odds are, you’ll start hearing more soon. Davis has recorded three comedy albums and has also made two appearances on Conan, the late-night talk show. He’s released his first comedy special with Amazon Prime, You Guys Are Dope, and in the fall, his first Comedy Central Half Hour will be released. Audiences can relate to his style of comedy that tends to be highly personal and filled with witty quips along with sharp punch lines.
