5 effective ways to relieve lower back pain in children.

Lower back pain is common among the general population, including children. Between 80% and 90% of people suffer from lower back pain at some time in their lives. Typically, a pulled muscle is the leading cause of back pain in children, and treating overuse or strain in the back can be resolved with some rest. But if you find your child is experiencing ongoing back pain, in the first instance, consult your doctor, then try some at-home therapies to help reduce pain.

Avoiding lying down all-day

One of the best ways to alleviate lower back pain in children is reducing their time lying down. Instead of opting for a more upright position. Lying down for long periods can increase irritation and inflammation in the lower back. Have them change positions frequently so as not to put too much pressure on the lower back

Work on your posture

One of the most effective ways to relieve lower back pain is good posture. Good posture can help eliminate or significantly reduce aches and pains that come from carrying heavy objects, sitting for long periods, or bending over to tie your shoes. It also takes the pressure off your back by keeping your spine in a neutral position. Get your child to follow some simple YouTube tutorials on improving posture for children.

Use ice and heat therapy.

Lower back pain is often caused by inflammation, which can be relieved with ice and heat therapy. Heat therapy increases blood flow to the area and can decrease muscle spasms. The heat will also help relax the muscles and prevent stiffness. On the other hand, cold therapy helps reduce swelling and muscle spasms and relieves some pain for sensitive skin.

Use a heating pad on a low setting for 10 minutes at a time for two hours a day, or use ice on the painful area for 20-30 minutes three times a day. The best way to use these therapies is to alternate between them every hour or two hours. Take care not to use anything too hot or cold and put a barrier between the pack and skin to avoid irritation or burns.

Visit a chiropractor

A chiropractor is a healthcare professional specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal system disorders, including the spine and joints. The main goal of a chiropractor is to restore your spine’s natural alignment. The idea is that if your spine is aligned correctly, then all other parts of the body will function correctly.

If you visit a Pediatric Chiropractor, they will examine your child before recommending any treatment.

Do stretching exercises

Stretching is one of the most effective ways to relieve lower back pain. There are a variety of stretches that can be done, but it is essential to consult a doctor first to identify which ones would be best for you. Stretching should be done both before and after intense activity.

If you have already consulted with a doctor and know what stretches would be safe for your child, you will see what you need to help them do each day. One easy way is doing yoga poses such as child’s pose or a downward-facing dog. You could also try doing side-lying leg lifts or hip rotations too.
