Top tips to look after your health

Health is wealth. Indeed. Nothing is more precious – especially in your old age – than good health (both physical health and mental health). And it is our responsibility to look after our bodies and minds through our lifetime; and as is the case with everything, the more effort you put in, the more you will receive.

Let’s look at some top tips that can help you look after your health.

  1. Diet And Exercise

A good, nutritious and healthy diet and regular exercise are THE two most important factors for good, long-lasting health. Instead of binge-eating and drinking on the weekends and then dieting through the week; or letting loose for months on end and then following a trendy new crash diet to lose the extra weight; what is better and healthier for you is a consistent nutritious diet.

Eat everything you like, including the desserts and burgers, but once in a while and in moderation. Make fruits, veggies, protein and healthy carbs and fats part of all your meals. Eat your five-a-day.

And make exercise a part of your daily routine. Diet and exercise go hand-in-hand. One can’t work effectively without the other. Be it a daily walk or run, swimming or gymming, or even a sport like tennis – make exercise a part of your life, not an add-on!

  1. Regular Eye And Dental Check-Ups

Prevention is better than cure, they say, and very rightly so. Regular eye and dental check-ups can help prevent more serious eye and teeth/gum-related problems, which can be detected earlier on.

If you have certain conditions such as a cataract or glaucoma or diabetes, then you must be even more regular with your eye check-ups; else annual (or whenever recommended by the doctor) check-ups for your vision should be fine.

You must also make it a point to visit the dentist for a general check-up once a year – not just when you have a cavity or a toothache! Dentists can detect poor oral hygiene and gum care and can advise you on improving the same, before it becomes more serious. Birmingham Dental is a good dental practice to register with if you live in or around the area.

  1. Go For Regular Blood Tests

Having an overall health check as well as a full-body blood test once a year is also a good way to keep on top of things, and a good habit to continue. Sometimes, issues such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar levels are only detected through tests – you might not show any symptoms or feel unwell. If detected earlier on, these can be treated immediately and possibly even reversed.

  1.  Mental Well-Being: Mindfulness and Meditation

Your physical health is also related to your mental health and well-being. If you are anxious, stressed or worried all the time, it will manifest through physical symptoms, low immunity and constant illnesses and fatigue.

Learn the art of mindfulness; it will help you focus better and be more present in the here and now, rather than lamenting about the past or worrying about the future. Also try to incorporate some meditation into your day – it has immense benefits.
