Keep Mess Under Control

Renovations are a messy business. Between rubble of building, dust and everything shoved into different rooms, home renovation can make the whole house feel like a building site, even if you’re only working on one room. Keep control of the mess where you can. Protect the rest of the house by covering furniture in dust sheets. Plastic sheeting across doors can help to keep dust from getting into the rest of the house, although you’ll probably have to accept you’ll be needing to get the hoover out more often.

Save yourself from making endless trips to the tip, or from putting up with stacks of builders’ debris waiting for trash collection. Hire a skip so you can keep the rubble under control and get rid of it in a timely manner.

Stick To Your Budget

Set a renovation budget and stick to it. Going over budget and over spending will make you even more stressed than the building work is already making you. Shop around for the best deals to get the most out of your money before booking any contractors to do your building work.

If you’re skilled with a toolkit or a paintbrush, you could think about doing some of the work useful. Interior design and basic decorating can be easy to complete yourself, which could save you a fair bit of money. Be certain you can manage to complete the job, though, as an improperly done job that needs a professional to fix will end up costing you more than you saved by trying to do it yourself.

Set Aside A Space For The Children

If you have kids in the house, it’s important to keep them safe during the building work. Kids can get into a lot of mischief very quickly, meaning that while you’re distracted with talking to the plumber or making decisions with the builder, you can’t watch them every moment of the day. To keep them out of trouble, set aside a room that is free from any building work. Put the kids toys in this room and make this the playroom while you have renovations going on. You can oversee the building work without worrying about what new and dangerous game the kids have invented amongst the mess.

Learn To Relax

Renovations are a stressful time. Things can go wrong, work gets delayed and the whole thing can take much longer than expected. Trying to maintain family life in a building site isn’t easy, and stress can make life very unpleasant. If you can, find a way to let go of the stress and accept the delays as part of the process. Take a break from the building site when you can, and find some time for normal family life in between the hard work
