Extending the loft? Here’s a few things to think about.

How exciting is it that you can take the time to extend your loft? Some people choose to have a bedroom suite upgraded and others choose to create the games room of their dreams. Loft conversions add charm, space, character and value to the home but they can also be a huge issue! They can be a cost-effective project and as a home improvement project, relatively easy to plan out. The thing is, loft conversions are unpredictable and anything can happen if you’re not careful. Mistakes happen and these mistakes can affect the outcome of the project in the build and in your wallet.

You have to think about hiring an architect, and where to hire an electrician to wire the loft for you so that you can actually use it as a living space. There could be more to it than your budget allows, which is why it’s so important to plan this properly. There are a few things that you should consider before you convert your loft, and these include:

  • Those Early Stages. Right at the start, you need to know the type of loft you want. There are different types, but the one that you choose will depend on the style you are going for and the shape of your roof. You can measure the space and you call in the interior designers to help you to make this space the best possible one that it can be. You have to also give notice to the neighbors before you make changes, just in case it causes any undue stress and noise. Offering them a timeline of the work to be completed and ensuring that you have your planning permission is all important!
  • Practicality First. You want the prettiest shapes and flooring, the right materials and all of the modern decor, but you also need this space to be practical and usable. You have to be realistic with the design features that you choose. If you want to be unique and choose different designs, look at sorting another room in the house in that funky style of yours! Sure, you want it all to look good, but that doesn’t mean that you should ignore the practical stuff! Choose aesthetics last.
  • Get Permission. If you want your loft conversion to go off without a hitch, you need to make sure that you have the right permits and the right building regulation certifications. You need this to be a smart build and ignoring the need for permission could mean that you are asked to take it all apart – it does happen!
  • Manage Your Expectations. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with a loft conversion if you’re not careful. Being realistic with your expectations for the build, the time it takes and the budget that you have means that you have to consider your deadlines and whether you can even start this project in the first place. There may be changes to the plan that you don’t expect, and this can affect the timeline altogether. When you expect these things to happen, you can ensure that you get the project right.
